My new writing routine - HabitDiary 21.11.2020
Welcome to my new Habit Diary. In the last two weeks, I thought a lot about my blogging. First, I was unsatisfied with my current formats, and now I am just inspired to write my novel more than just a scene per week. If you are interested in a grimdark Scifi novel, then you can read it here. I want to finish it this year, and for that, I want to write a new scene every day. I can't maintain the same blogging activity, but I don't want to pause all blogging. I decided to write a Habit Diary every two weeks, where I describe my current routine and how I plan to change it to hopefully achieve excellent results in all my projects. It is probably something I can maintain, and I believe that it could inspire you to change something in your life, too.
Let's start in the night before every day: Around ten in the evening, I will turn off all electronics and begin writing the first version of a new scene for my novel or respectively a Habit Diary every second Tuesday night. I have already done this the last couple of weeks whenever I wanted to write an article for the next day, so it is nothing entirely new for me doing this. Since I want to write something every morning, I need to write something every night instead of every second night. That is the only difference.
Every morning starts with a 10 minutes meditation. I already do this for about a month. Then I will take what I wrote the night before and rewrite and publish it. Like I said, that is nothing new. The new thing is that I will do it every morning now. The morning starts around eight with breakfast and goes until eleven in the morning. Because not all scenes have the same length and I am waking up naturally at different times, the given timeframes are just for orientation. I have become accustomed to working in 45 sprints with 15 minutes break between every sprint. In the breaks, I used to surf on social media, but in the last days I read instead, and I want to continue it this way.
In the day between 11 and 18, I work on my other projects depending on the day. There is also a lunch and walking pause between 12 and 14. You may ask why start at 11 to work for one hour and then do a two-hour break? It is hard for me to start something new immediately after the break, so I want to start with it before the break. Again I work in 45 minutes sprints with a 15-minute break for drinking water, stretching and reading. On Monday I study for the one last university class I have to pass. There is also a university project, I have to pass, and I work on it on Tuesday and Wednesday. On Thursday and Friday, I work on the voluntary work search website I already wrote so much about. I have a new vision for this project where it looks like a game and I want to implement that. On Saturday, I improve the reader experience on my eBook reader website, where you can read tales of Nowardo. Sunday I an exciting day: It is reserved for reflection, relaxing, trying out new things and learning new skills. I divided the days on my projects just last Sunday, so this part is entirely experimental. It slightly crumbles already in the sense that not all projects are equal. No problemo. I will just solve it by switching to the next day's tasks if I have to wait on someone else to continue working or finished studying.
The last phase starts with dinner at 18 o'clock. After that, I am free to use social media, to stream and play video games with friends. Yes, that is right. I don't do social media before 18 o'clock. At least that is what I planned. I looked into twitter for 10 minutes this morning. Maybe I need to remove social media from my phone to achieve it. Maintaining focus, motivation and energy until 18 will be probably my biggest challenge because I regularly came only until 16 so far.
That is enough about my current and aspired routine. Did my description help or inspire you to implement some changes as well? Remember that you probably won't change your life entirely in one or two weeks. What I described as my current routine are habits I build up over months, so make a bit change every time and don't get demotivated when it doesn't work out as expected. I don't expect that I will have the routine I just described in two weeks, but if I work on myself, I will be closer to it for sure. If I helped you with my article, please write to me on twitter, because it will motivate me to continue writing these diaries.
Every Habit Diary will contain a bonus part, where I write about the book I am currently reading. This week I am reading "Digital Minimalism" from Cal Newport. The book gave me a very fascinating perspective on technology. Using social media, for example, has many benefits, but depending on the usage, the cost in lifetime and attention could be higher than those benefits. The presented solution is to use technology (or not) intentionally following your values and optimize your usage to maximize the positive and minimize adverse effects. I already modified my schedule to strict social media, streaming and games to the evening. The author advice to even stop all non-vital usage of those technologies for 30 days and then introduce them intentionally and in an optimized way step by step. Maybe I will do this, perhaps I won't. My schedule looks just fine right now.
The next Habit Diary is coming in two weeks. I hope you have a great time and stay inspired.
